THE GAFFER

Ross Jenkins

Thanks for coming out to support us on for our final pre-season game of 2025

The summer has flown past but we've been back for a good few weeks now and are in good shape after some very encouraging performances. We've tested ourselves against a wide range of opposition: local teams like Easington and Banbury, young sides like Charlton's under 21s and now a really strong National League South side in Maidenhead.

Obviously Alan Devonshire will be using the game to put the finishing touches to his preparations as well. We wish them well for the season ahead.

If you look around the ground today you'll see new buildings and facilities and hopefully you see a club tat is literally building for the future. It's exciting to be involved in that and it's exciting to be able to play in front of our fans one more time before the big kick-off next week away at Fylde.

Enjoy the game,

ROSS

Ashby Relishing Armband

The Big Interview

There's a new captain at Oxford City this season with Josh Ashby taking on the role following the departure of long-serving skipper Reece Fleet. As Josh told us this week, the extra responsibility is something to relish...

"I've done it before" Ashby told us after training on Tuesday. "Fleety missed a few games here and there and I was always very proud to be asked and to take on the captain role. although I guess it's a little different when you are asked to do it permanently. But when Ross mentioned it I jumped at the chance; it's great to know that the Gaffer has that faith in you as a person as well as a player."

"There are different ways of doing it. I'm fairly vocal on the pitch anyway" he says "not in a snarling way, geeing players up, just trying to communicate and help everyone around me. When I was a kid I had Jake Wright as a captain at Oxford United and he was brilliant. He'd always be there to help and give advice and you'd see young players come in on loan and just know they were staying at Jake's while they got themselves sorted. I'm not able to do that just yet although I am looking at houses!

"Then at City Fleety was a brilliant captain, just quietly going about his business, always leading by example and making sure we were all together as a team

"I think you learn from everyone you play alongside really. I don't think the armband will change much about my game although I've suddenly become one of the senior players in the squad: it's a young group so it's up to people like me, Alfie and Josh Parker to use our experience in any way we can."

"Saturday will be another example of that. Maidenhead will be one of the favourites for promotion in their league, I'm sure. It's the last warm up game for both teams so the Managers will want to look at a few things and make sure we are as close to ready as you can be with a week to go. Then, next Saturday, we kick off again and things get more serious. I can't wait."

ON THE ROAD

With the Hoops to Gloucester City

Look, let’s start as we mean to go on this season. I did NOT choose to go to Gloucester for a pre-season friendly purely on the basis of the nearby services being really good. Twinned with the King of Services, Tebay, Gloucester Services offer a full Farm Shop experience for the weary motorist and I am definitely not tucking into a hog roast sausage roll when the team minibus put a message in the group chat to say they are stuck in traffic.

It’s pre-season for a reason and such logistical obstacles are there to be conquered. Once Upon a Time the Romans got to Gloucester and established a major settlement there. Imagine if they’d had Shaun Fisher driving their minibus?

”Sorry Centurion, there’s a lane closure by Costa. Me and the legion are beaten.”

Having experienced Shaun's driving I am travelling alone today and get to the ground to find Ross Jenkins and Andy Ballard surveying the pitch. It’s a 3G surface and looks good. For many years this ground flooded every winter to the point where the crossbar was often the only sign of a football pitch. Eventually, tired of rolling up their trousers and sitting on desks, Gloucester elevated the playing surface. The dressing rooms are about three metres below the pitch and the players have to come up some steep concrete steps to play the game.

Eventually having beaten the jam, the distant echo of faraway players, hating waiting, repeat my own on the glazed, dirty steps and we are reunited and can start to prepare.

It’s a nice ground, built from countless storage containers which form offices, stands, toilets and all things in between. It’s a lot neater than that sounds and I mingle with the home fans as we wait for kick off. They are optimistic for the season ahead and with good reason based on the opening minutes of the match where they pass and move and look good. City, with seven trialists involved, survive a scare as Gloucester roll back the years and float one on to the bar early on but ten minutes in, Josh Parker’s superbly weighted through ball sends Tom Scott away and he makes it 1-0

The Hoops might extend their lead but both sides lose a bit of rhythm and shape as a flurry of subs interrupt the flow. I'm not doing the subs/flooding gag you expect here. Make your own jokes up. Joe Hanks levels for the home side and it ends up 1-1. although neither side is totally worried about the final score.

The fans file away into the light drizzle. Having conducted interviews we follow soon after  and I drive across the Cotswolds with the radio blaring out a tribute to Ozzy Osbourne who died that day. This makes me feel sad, but the imminent season cheers me up. First away game done. Can’t wait for the real thing.

All aboard the Crazy Train…
